Dr. Laura Periman
MD, Ocular Surface Disease Expert
Laura Periman, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist, fellowship- trained cornea and refractive surgeon and Ocular Surface Disease Expert. She knew she wanted to be a doctor since the age of 12 and always seen eyes as the key defining feature of every person. Her interests in molecular biology began with winning the Terry Spies Memorial Scholarship at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center as an undergraduate at Willamette University in Salem, OR. Her interests in immunopathophysiology took root during her work in Research and Development at Immunex Corporation in the Molecular Biology Department prior to attending medical school at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. During medical school, she received the Rex and Arlene Garrison Oncology Fellowship, the Western Medical Student Research Committee Award for Excellence and was elected to the honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. Upon graduation with honors, she also received the Georgianna Kirby Award for outstanding patient dedication and compassion. Dr Periman completed her Ophthalmology Residency as well as Cornea/ Refractive Fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle. She has nine peer reviewed publications and has written extensively on the topic of Ocular Surface Disease. Her unique and passionate perspective on OSD stems from her work in immunopathophysiology. She is an innovator and enthusiastic speaker who loves bridging the gap between basic science, clinical practice and patient compassion. As Director of Dry Eye Services at Evergreen Eye Center Seattle, she combines her clinical care passion, scientific drive and innovative creativity to provide first class Ocular Surface Disease management.
Dr. Richard Maharaj
Dr. Richard Maharaj is the Clinic Director at eyeLABS Optometry and Center for Ocular Surface Disease and Senior Staff Optometrist at York-Finch Ophthalmology, Toronto. Dr. Maharaj is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and Clinical Adjunct Faculty at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry. He continues to develop new techniques and devices for non-surgical clinical care of the meibomian glands and ocular surface. He was also selected by Johnson and Johnson Vision as one of the top 40 optometrists under 40 in Canada. He is an international speaker on primary management of eye diseases, a published author on ocular surface disease, current Board Editor for Journal of Dry Eye Disease and Chair for the Canadian Association of Optometry’s Section for ocular surface diseases.
Dr. Sruthi Srinivasan PhD
Assistant Professor - Waterloo School of Optometry
Dr Sruthi Srinivasan is a Senior Clinical Scientist, Clinical Research Manager and a Research Assistant Professor, at the Centre for Ocular Research and Education (CORE), School of Optometry and Vision Science, University of Waterloo, Canada. With over 15 years of experience in the field of dry eye Research, she is actively involved in various clinical trials conducted at CORE. Her research interests include Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, Dry Eye Disease and Contact Lens Discomfort. She collaborates with dry eye experts around the world and has published over 30 peer reviewed articles. Further, she has published over 70 professional articles, two book chapters and has lectured in several countries around the world.
She is a recipient of the American Optometric Foundation’s prestigious William Ezell Fellowship. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a Member of the International Society for Contact Lens Research and Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS). Sruthi has contributed to the TFOS’ Contact Lens Discomfort Workshop and the TFOS DEWS2 workshop and she was recently named as a Canadian TFOS Ambassador. She is currently serving as a member of the American Academy of Optometry’s Scientific Program Committee. She also serves as a referee for several Ophthalmology & Optometry journals.

Dr. Scott Schacter
OD - Global Ambassador TFOS
Dr. Schachter received his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1989 from Southern California College of Optometry. and opened a private practice in Pismo Beach, CA in 1994, with an emphasis on ocular surface disease. Dr. Schachter is an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Marshall B. Ketchum University. and has presented scientific posters and published articles in peer-review scientific journals such as Optometry and Vision Science Journal, ARVO, AAO, and AOA. Dr. Schachter has been featured in videos and articles in numerous optometric publications. He is also a Vision Source Administrator for the California Central Coast, and was recently named a Global Ambassador for the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society.
Dr. Langis Michaud
OD, Professor U of Montreal
Dr Michaud graduated from Université de Montréal (OD-1986; M.Sc. 1998). Since 2001, he is working there as a full professor. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Optometry, Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association, of the Scleral Lens Education Society and of the European Academy of Optometry.
He authored many articles in peer-reviewed journals and had been invited to speak around the world. He is an editorial board member of Journal of Contact Lens Research and Science, and of the Scleral Lens Education Society. He is the current president of the Quebec College of Optometrists.
Dr. Trevor Miranda
Dr. Miranda was raised in Simcoe, Ontario and graduated from the University of Waterloo with his Doctorate of Optometry in 1995. Following graduation, he moved to beautiful Vancouver Island, where he continues to serve the eye care needs of the Cowichan Valley. Trevor is also an active member of the Third World Eye Care Society and has participated with other professionals to improve the vision of the less fortunate. Dr. Miranda was named Optometrist of the Year by the British Columbia Association of Optometrists in March 2015. This prestigious honour recognized Dr. Miranda’s commitment to providing every patient with exceptional care while mentoring optometrists across Canada. Outside the office, you will find Trevor enjoying hockey, coaching soccer, involved with the South Cowichan Rotary Club, and spending time with his wife Cheryl and their three children. Trevor looks forward to continuing to care for the eyes of the Cowichan Valley and welcomes new patients without a referral.
Dr. Roshni Echharam
Dr. Echharam graduated with a Doctor of Optometry degree (O.D) with honors in 2002 from the New England College of Optometry in Boston. Upon graduation Dr. Echharam worked in Chicago, IL for a year. Since moving to Toronto in September 2003, Dr. Echharam has worked with many reputable ophthalmology and optometry practices. She has a strong interest and focus in the prevention and management of ocular diseases including Glaucoma, Age Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic eye disease, and most recently dry eye disease. At the Yorkville Eye Clinic, Dr. Echharam had the opportunity to work with Dr. Barbara Caffery treating and managing patients with dry eye disease related to Sjogren’s syndrome. She has also gained experience in prescribing medically necessary contact lenses, like scleral contact lenses, for conditions including Keratoconus and Dry eye disease. Dr. Echharam is a member of the Scleral Lens Education Society, and has traveled to many locations in North America to master the art of fitting these highly specialized lenses. She is also an active member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO), the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO), and the College of Optometrists of Ontario. When she’s not doing comprehensive eye exams, Dr. Echharam enjoys spending time with her daughter. She also enjoys cooking, classical music and the theatre. Dr. Roshni Echharam is originally from Durban, South Africa.
